Our little cottage in Scottdale now has solar! The panels were installed on Monday, and it was quite the project but the company made quick work of it.
We used a program called Georgia Bright in partnership with Sunpath Solar. The panels will require monthly payments, but the savings on our power bill should more than offset that cost. The solar company will maintain and service the panels if any issues should arise. The way the power gets integrated into the grid is complicated. While we won’t get paid for any excess power we generate (my AC usage would suggest we won’t have too many days of excess power anyway) our panels can help support the grid in times of higher loads. For all the nitty gritty details, you can visit https://georgiabright.org/faq/.
We are still waiting for GA Power to do some testing and then the system will go live. Hopefully, this will happen by the end of the month, as August is generally one of our highest power usage months. We are already feeling the benefit of less sunlight hitting our roof and heating up our attic, which means our AC isn’t working nearly as hard to keep things comfortable. Whether or not we come out ahead, break even, or even pay a little more, we felt it was worth it to take this small step as part of our love and care for creation.
It also looks very cool to have such modern technology on our 100+ year old cottage. The shiny black panels contrast nicely with our brightly colored flowers in the garden.

Do you have solar on your home? If not, is it in your plans for the future? We’d love to hear about it!
